It's the season . . . where we watch those who have faithfully served education ride into the sunset of a new adventure in their lifetimes. For me, last week was great. I had the chance to honor folks who are retiring and it gives me pause as I wonder about the many lives those retirees have touched. It's amazing.
My father retired at 55. No, that's not a typo. Jealous? Yeah.
But I digress.
Retirement nearly killed him. Seriously. If he hadn't a: Moved closer to be near Mary and I b: watched my infant son William grow up, he would've been dead much sooner than 77 years old. But why?
Our lives have to have purpose, something greater than ourselves. When he left work after serving with Boeing for the better part of 30 years, he lost a part of himself and the purpose that flows from doing work you enjoy.
It's my hope that our retirees have their purpose in their golden years, whether that's being with family, traveling, or simply growing a garden, I wish all of them the purpose to live a life fulfilled, that they may enjoy their long, hard-earned time.
