Microsociety

Where does one begin? Microsociety, put simply, is amazing. The level of sophistication I saw in students, especially the upper grades, was truly inspiring. At this elementary that we visited, you could tell that these students owned the school, that it was their school and that they cared about what went on.

Children were in charge of businesses and other organizations. They were excited and enthusiastic about their business, earning money, and of course, spending it. I have seen some great programs this year in elementary schools.

At Waterville, I watched Morning Meeting and the importance of Student Voice and Student Choice. (Which is echoed in Microsociety)

I learned about and talked with people from North Carolina about their flagship school, AB COMBS elementary and how characters and proactivity have lead to amazing changes in students.

And most recently, had a change to visit Talbot Hill in Renton to watch Microsociety work and to interact with parents and children.

Three amazing schools, each with different programs, but each having student voice and choice as a central theme to their successes.

It's inspiring.
