Okay, so I never have ever worked in fast food. This is my disclaimer. That aside, I have to say that our recent McTeachers night (where we have staff take over some of the duties at McDonalds) was really rather fun. Though I spent a little time at the ice cream (I have a newfound understanding and respect for those people that do soft serve) I have to say I really got into grilling and watching the chicken and hamburgers. What a system...
Burned an hour like that (insert snap of fingers)
Thanks to all those who participated and helped.

Student Council and a Phoenix rising
Our student council (applaud squad) elections were yesterday and I was so impressed by how well the students did. It was really the first time Outlook has done this in a long time and I was encouraged by the students and what they did. I am looking forward to working with a quality group of kids next year.
Today, the art commission met with our artist, Mary, and we went over what will eventually become our mural in the commons area. I was so impressed by it and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished work. As we talked, we discussed about this year and how through all the fire and everything else that's happened, we are emerging out of the ashes, like that of a phoenix, the mythical bird that periodically dies, only to be resurrected anew...a different creature. Outlook is emerging as a different entity and I believe that was will emerge in the coming years is something wonderful.
Rise, Phoenix, Rise!

Microsociety
Where does one begin? Microsociety, put simply, is amazing. The level of sophistication I saw in students, especially the upper grades, was truly inspiring. At this elementary that we visited, you could tell that these students owned the school, that it was their school and that they cared about what went on.
Children were in charge of businesses and other organizations. They were excited and enthusiastic about their business, earning money, and of course, spending it. I have seen some great programs this year in elementary schools.
At Waterville, I watched Morning Meeting and the importance of Student Voice and Student Choice. (Which is echoed in Microsociety)
I learned about and talked with people from North Carolina about their flagship school, AB COMBS elementary and how characters and proactivity have lead to amazing changes in students.
And most recently, had a change to visit Talbot Hill in Renton to watch Microsociety work and to interact with parents and children.
Three amazing schools, each with different programs, but each having student voice and choice as a central theme to their successes.
It's inspiring.

Missoula Children's Theater and some Microsociety to boot
Way back in the fall, (that seems so long ago) at one of our first Booster Club Meetings, we discussed the possibility of bringing Missoula Children's Theater to Outlook. Though they usually book well in advance (like 2 years) we actually found that the first week of May was open and we booked it.
At first, especially early Monday morning of this week, I thought that there was a good chance we wouldn't have enough people try out. I was so happy and excited to see that over 85 students tried out. Though we couldn't cast everyone, many did get cast and it's so awesome to see the power of drama and song and dance mixed together. As I have watched rehearsals these past few days, I am so proud of the students and how they are working. Whether or not Saturday's performance is stellar or not, to see what these kids are doing and the experiences they are having is worth every penny we're paying! EVERY PENNY!
On top of all this, we're taking a team to see an exciting program in the Renton School District called Microsociety. I've heard and learned a lot about this program this year and tomorrow we get to go and watch it for a first time and really see how it all works in action. I'm very excited to see this and wonder what, if any, we could bring to Outlook.
